God The Son | Jesus The Bread of Life

About this series:

Written by John as an eyewitness to Jesus' ministry, death, and resurrection, his gospel has a clear stated purpose: that readers would believe Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and find life in his name (20:30–31).

John's gospel is rich with iconic moments — from the poetic prologue to vivid personal encounters, remarkable miracles, and extended teaching. It includes some of Jesus' most memorable sayings, particularly the "I am" statements, in which Jesus describes himself as the Bread of Life, the Light of the World, the Good Shepherd, the Resurrection and the Life, the Way, the Truth and the Life, and the True Vine.

This series works through eleven of those titles across John's gospel, exploring who Jesus claimed to be — and what that means for us today.

About this talk:

Jesus is both the fundamental ingredient for eternal life and he is the ‘bread’ that is greater than the bread God provided for his people while they wandered in the wilderness. He is “the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world”.

Devotional: What Are You Hungry For?

John 6:25–59 · Jesus the Bread of Life

Jesus once looked a crowd in the eye and said, "I am what you need most." That's either the most arrogant thing anyone has ever said — or it changes everything.

Discussion Questions

  1. What's one thing you've chased recently, hoping it would make you feel full or settled? Did it?

  2. Jesus tells the crowd the "work" God requires is simply to believe. Why do you think that's so hard to accept?

  3. Every other belief system has a list of things you must do to earn your way to God. How does it feel to hear that Jesus is saying the opposite?

  4. Charles Spurgeon spent years trying to find peace through effort and religion — until someone said "just look." What does it mean for you to "look to Jesus" this week?

  5. John 6 mentions three times that the Father is the one drawing people to Jesus. How does it change things to know that God was already moving before you took your first step toward him?

This Week

Try this: Each morning, before you reach for your phone or coffee, take 30 seconds to say: "Jesus, you're what I actually need today." Notice how that lands differently across the week.

Go deeper: Read Exodus 16:2–4 alongside John 6:32–35. What do you notice about the way God provides — both then and now?

Prayer

God, it's easier to go looking for other things than to just come to you. Help me believe — really believe — that Jesus is actually enough. Not just a good addition to my life, but the main thing. Draw me closer this week. Amen.
