God The Son | Jesus The Bridegroom

About this series:

Written by John as an eyewitness to Jesus' ministry, death, and resurrection, his gospel has a clear stated purpose: that readers would believe Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and find life in his name (20:30–31).

John's gospel is rich with iconic moments — from the poetic prologue to vivid personal encounters, remarkable miracles, and extended teaching. It includes some of Jesus' most memorable sayings, particularly the "I am" statements, in which Jesus describes himself as the Bread of Life, the Light of the World, the Good Shepherd, the Resurrection and the Life, the Way, the Truth and the Life, and the True Vine.

This series works through eleven of those titles across John's gospel, exploring who Jesus claimed to be — and what that means for us today.

About this talk:

Some of the titles of Jesus in John's gospel are familiar to many - the Word, the Lamb of God, the Bread of Life, and so on. In chapter 3 John records John the Baptist tell a very short parable in which he describes Jesus as "the bridegroom." From roots in the Old Testament to its culmination in the Book of Revelation, this lesser-known title of Jesus is both beautiful and deeply important to understanding who Jesus is and what he came to do.

You Are Wanted - Jesus the Bridegroom

John 3:22–30

Intro

Jesus isn't just a teacher or a rescuer. He's a bridegroom — and that changes everything about how you understand his love for you. This week, we're looking at one of the most surprising ways Scripture describes who Jesus is and what he wants with us.

Discussion Questions

  1. Think about a role you play — at work, at home, in your group. What do you find easy about staying in your lane? What makes it hard?

  2. John says he was "only ever a signpost, not the destination." Who are the signposts in your life who have pointed you toward Jesus?

  3. Scripture describes God's people as his bride. What does that picture stir up in you — comfort, confusion, something else? Why?

  4. The bridegroom chooses, pursues, and lays down his life for his bride. How does that change the way you think about how God sees you?

  5. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:10: "By the grace of God I am what I am." Is there something God has made you that you've been resisting or comparing away?

This Week

Write it down. Finish this sentence: "By the grace of God I am ___, and I am not ___." Sit with it. Let it be a release, not a resignation.

Tell someone. Think of one person who has been a signpost pointing you toward Jesus. Send them a message this week and tell them the difference they've made.

Prayer

Jesus, it's hard to take in — that you see me as someone worth choosing, worth pursuing, worth dying for. Thank you that you don't just tolerate me. You want me.

Help me stop competing with people around me and stop trying to be something I'm not. I want to play the part you've actually given me — and play it well.

Grow in me. I want to become less so you can become more. Amen.
