God The Son | Jesus The Word
About this series:
Written by John as an eyewitness to Jesus' ministry, death, and resurrection, his gospel has a clear stated purpose: that readers would believe Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and find life in his name (20:30–31).
John's gospel is rich with iconic moments — from the poetic prologue to vivid personal encounters, remarkable miracles, and extended teaching. It includes some of Jesus' most memorable sayings, particularly the "I am" statements, in which Jesus describes himself as the Bread of Life, the Light of the World, the Good Shepherd, the Resurrection and the Life, the Way, the Truth and the Life, and the True Vine.
This series works through eleven of those titles across John's gospel, exploring who Jesus claimed to be — and what that means for us today.
About this talk:
The start of John's gospel is one of the most profound passages in the Bible. In it, John makes some crucial statements about who Jesus is and how it could be that he was the Word of God in human form.

Devotional: Jesus the Word
Read: John 1:1–18
Words reveal who we are. When God wanted to show us exactly who he is, he didn't just send a message — he sent himself. John calls Jesus "the Word," and that title tells us everything. This week, we're looking at what that means and why it changes everything.
Discussion Questions
01 — Start here
Think of a time when a letter, text, or conversation made you feel really known by someone. What made it meaningful?
02 — Get into the passage
John 1:1 says the Word "was in the beginning." What does it do to your picture of Jesus to know he wasn't created — he always was?
03 — Go deeper
Verse 14 says the Word "became flesh and moved into the neighbourhood" (MSG). What does it mean to you that God chose to show up in person rather than just speak from a distance?
04 — Get personal
Verse 18 says Jesus has "made God known." Where have you seen or felt God most clearly — through something Jesus said, something he did, or something about who he is?
05 — Challenge
John says he wrote so we'd believe and have life. Is there anything about who Jesus is that you still find hard to hold onto? What would help?
This Week
Read John 1:1–18 again slowly on your own — maybe in a different version. Pick one thing that stands out and sit with it for a few minutes.
Pick one question Jesus asked in the Gospels (there are many) and ask yourself how you'd honestly answer it. If you're not sure where to start, try John 1:38: "What are you looking for?"
Prayer
Jesus, it's kind of staggering — you were there before everything, and then you showed up. In person. Thank you for not staying distant. Help us to actually listen to you this week, to look at you, and to trust what we see. Amen.
