“What I enjoy most is the people. You get to meet people from all walks of life, and over time, you really get to know them.”
Behind every warm welcome at Citygate Bournemouth is a team of people who believe that a cup of tea and a friendly face can change someone's Sunday. Andrea leads our Refreshments Team, bringing a gift of hospitality and a heart for making people feel at home. We sat down with her to find out what drives the team, what God has been teaching her through serving, and why she thinks the little things matter.
What inspired you to join or lead the Refreshments Team?
I’ve always loved serving people because it’s one of the ways I show love to others. It’s something that comes quite naturally to me, and I feel it’s one of the skills God has given me, so being part of the Refreshments Team felt like a really good fit. The leading side came later, but over time, I realised that was something God was growing in me too.
Why do you think hospitality is such an important part of church life?
We want people to feel at home, and something as simple as a smile, a conversation, or a cup of tea can help someone go from feeling like a visitor to feeling like family.
What do you enjoy most about serving on the team?
What I enjoy most is the people. You get to meet people from all walks of life, and over time, you really get to know them. It’s lovely to build friendships through serving together, and even simple moments like sharing Christmas lunch with a teammate.
What kind of atmosphere are you hoping to create for people on a Sunday?
The one that feels warm, relaxed, joyful, and full of God’s love — a place where people can be themselves, connect with others, and feel safe.
How have you seen simple acts of hospitality impact people?
At special events like Alpha breakfasts, Carol services, and Easter Sundays, we love serving little treats like croissants, mince pies, or hot cross buns alongside hot drinks. It may seem like a small thing, but people really appreciate the care behind it. Those simple touches could help someone feel included and genuinely loved.
What makes the Refreshments Team special or unique?
I’m not sure how unique it is, but what makes the team special is the people and the way they connect, sharing the care and love we receive from God.
What has God been teaching you through serving in this area?
God has been teaching me that we’re all different, with many nationalities, traditions, and ways of caring for one another, and that’s something really beautiful. None of us can do everything perfectly on our own, but together we can make it work. It reminds me that we are all part of God’s tapestry, and each person brings something valuable to the bigger picture.
Can you share a memorable or encouraging moment from the team?
That’s a difficult one because there have been so many little moments that have really warmed my heart. One thing I especially love is that we try to have different choices of treats for people, like a gluten-free option or something different for those who don’t like mince pies (I’m one of them!). It’s so lovely to see the joy on someone’s face when they realise there’s something there for them too.
What would you say to someone considering joining the Refreshments Team?
I would say, come and be part of it. The team is like a wonderfully beautiful tapestry, with each person bringing something different and valuable. You will not only have the opportunity to bless others, but you will also be encouraged and blessed yourself through being part of such a warm and caring team.
In one sentence, how would you describe the heart of the team?
We want everyone who comes in to feel at home and looked after.
